What is Silent Rebellion?

As the climate and ecological emergency becomes clearer to us, our stress and adrenaline may be rising. It is vital that we stay calm and connected to our inner wellbeing.

Sometimes this means pausing the treadmill of activity and simply resting in silence.
Coming together to do this can be a powerful experience, and even more so in a busy public space, where passers-by will see a beautiful and meaningful expression of our love for the earth and all life.
Everyone is welcome to join XR Cambridge and other local people for meditation (or simply silent reflection and contemplation) in a park or on the floor of a public space.

Please subscribe above to receive details of Silent Rebellion events.

Whilst it is part of Extinction Rebellion Cambridge (and bound by its non-violent principles), Silent Rebellion are safe, meditative actions supported by Buddhist meditation practitioners. We won't be deliberately disrupting anyone.

The story so far
1. Saturday 21 September 2019, Christ's Pieces
Nearly 50 people came to our first Silent Rebellion on Saturday 21 September 2019 (see the newspaper article below or click here for the photographs). And due to the reaction we had we decided to roll the idea out to become regular.
2. Saturday 23 November 2019, Grand Arcade shopping centre
For our second Silent Rebellion about 25 Rebels meditated in the warm and bustling Grand Arcade, sitting outside the entrance to John Lewis.
3. Friday 29 November 2019, the Grafton shopping centre
42 sat in the the festive Grafton for our third Silent Rebellion, on Black Friday. We were graced with the breathtaking presence of the Red Rebel Brigade.
4. Saturday 21 December 2019, Grand Arcade shopping centre
With the intense Christmas shopping frenzy, about 30 sat in the Grand Arcade shopping centre for our fourth and longest Silent Rebellion. We unveiled our gorgeous new Silent Rebellion banner and for the first time we brought spare cushions to make it easier for anyone to join in.

We meditated on the beauty and meaningfulness of the Red Rebel Brigade, and after an hour we had to make space for the Global Justice brass band. We enjoyed becoming aware of their Christmas Carols in harmony with the present-hungry crowds.
5. Saturday 25 January 2020, Grand Arcade shopping centre
The idea is clearly getting into its stride now, as about 50 Silent Rebels - from all walks of life including one only a few weeks old - joined for all or part of our fifth Silent Rebellion. And it's always wonderful when people sit with us spontaneously!

We had a little more space in Grand Arcade this time, and volunteers enjoyed many dozens of good conversations and gave out hundreds of our leaflets inspiring people to live simply so that others could simply live.

We were delighted that two local newspapers sent photographers and reporters to cover what we are doing. Read the Cambridge Independent and Cambridge News articles.
6. Saturday 1 February 2020, the Grafton shopping centre
Our 6th Silent Rebellion was another good experience of being human.

With a total of around 40 participants over the hour and a half, the spaciousness of the Grafton Centre's main entrance area and a slightly more challenging reaction of passers-by gave the sit a stronger feel.

The Red Rebels parade added even more beauty to the stillness and we 'benefited' from live-blogging by the Cambridge News
7. Sunday 23 February 2020, Lion Yard shopping centre
Thirty of us sat in silence, reflecting at the end of a momentous Rebel for Justice week in which a patch of grass made global news.

It was notable also for being our first Sunday and our first sit in Lion Yard shopping centre. We are sorry that the time was changed with only a day or so notice, but yet again we embodied compassion. Read more in the Cambridge Independent.
8. Saturday 25 April 2020, online
Our first Silent Rebellion online was a lovely, connecting experience.

29 people logged into our Zoom meeting and sat in their homes for a deepening 40 minute loving kindness meditation led by Triratna Buddhist Order Member Sarvajit. Then we enjoyed a friendly chat!

Silent Rebellion has always welcomed visitors from all corners of the world to Cambridge, and going online made that even easier! Meditators joined us from as far as Majorca and Edinburgh, and one participant (Suryamani) sat outside their Cambridge house to be witnessed by passing pedestrians and motorists.

In introducing the session, Jez quoted the writer Damian Barr who tweeted that ‘We are not all in the same boat. We are all in the same storm.” That resonated strongly with Jez - knowing that during this pandemic lockdown some of us are in super-yachts whereas some are in a leaking rowing boat with one oar.

Whatever our circumstances, just about the best possible activity for the situation we are in right now, is to give ourselves some space to work with our minds alongside others. To see more clearly what's going on. To connect with others in the joint pursuit of contentment through the protection of ourselves and all beings.

We look forward to doing this together for an hour on Saturday morning, because the session was valued so much that the group wants it to be held weekly! See the top of this page for details.

23. Saturday 8 August 2020, Christ's Pieces and online
Silent Rebellion returned to face the world again!

On Saturday morning 17 people sat physically-distanced on Christ's Pieces to show love for life and their choice of contentment over consumption.

The meditation marked almost a year since Silent Rebellion launched on the same central Cambridge spot, leading to six more events in a variety of shopping centres until the pandemic lockdown interrupted things.

The intervening six months has seen the compassionate community meditate together online on 15 occasions, with Silent Rebellion now reaching a total of 700 physical and digital participants and witnessed by countless shoppers and passers-by.

On this latest occasion Buddhist teacher and Extinction Rebellion activist Suryamani led a meditation which created a strong sense of stillness both in the busy park and live online for those who were unable to attend in person.

27. Saturday 5 September 2020, Christ's Pieces and online
A sunnier early morning brought 15 of us out to meditate in the beautiful setting of Christ's Pieces.

On the day when the printing of some newspapers - controlled by a handful of powerful billionaires who feed us stories that suit their interests - was disrupted by Extinction Rebels, we found that we could connect with the truth of our experience.

Freeing the truth was the theme Suryamani took up her guided meditation for 13 more who joined us online.
28. Saturday 12 September 2020, Christ's Pieces and online
By meditating along the path at Christ's Pieces on Saturday, 19 of us expressed our solemn intention to protect the planet for all living beings.

And that was the theme of Sarvajit's meditation to those who logged on from home. He led us through a meditation based on XR's Solemn Intention Statement. "The first time I heard it, I was truly inspired by its principles and the links with my own Buddhist values", he said.
